Examples of swallowed poisons?
Chemicals, fungis, berries.
Prescribed and over the counter drugs.
Signs and symptoms of poisons
-nausea and vomiting (sometimes blood-stained)
-pain or burning sensation
-cramping stomach pains
-seizures
-reduced level of response.
What to do if they are responsive and have swallowed poison?
-Ask them what they have swallowed, how much and when
-Do not try to make them vomit
-If they have vomited, put into container and hand to professionals
-Call 999
What to do if they are unresponsive and have swallowed poison?
-Call 999
-Look for clues for what they have swallowed,
-perform cpr
Foreign objects context
Children and babies often push foreign objects into their nose or ears. If a foreign object becomes lodged in the ear, like cotton wool or insects, this can cause temporary deafness. If a foreign object becomes lodged in the nose, like ‘button’ batteries, it can cause bleeding or burns.
What do with a foreign object in babies?
-Call 999
-Do not try to remove as you might push it further
-Keep casualty calm
What to do with insect on ear ?
-Have the ear facing upwards and flush with water
Eye injuries context
Foreign objects (such as grit, a loose eyelash or a contact lens) that lie on the surface of the eye can easily be rinsed out. Sharp fragments like metal or glass may cut or penetrate the eye and become embedded. If this is the case, the person should not attempt to remove the object but cover the eye and seek medical help as soon as possible.
Signs and symptoms of eye injuries
-pain or discomfort in the eye or eyelid
-redness and watering of the eye
-a visible wound or a bloodshot appearance
-blurred, partial or a total loss of vision.
What to with eye injuries
-Ask casualty not to rub eyes and sit facing light
-Open their eyelids with your thumb and ask them look left right up down
-Tilt head back and wash eye with water
-If not coming out, use the corner of a tissue to try remove it.
-If not working, seek medical advice
