POH, Weight and balance Flashcards
Where will you find the latest addition of the POH?
Robinson helicopter website?
Can you park your helicopter in a small hangar space with height of 11 feet from ground to roof?
R44 height is 129” (10’9) so it would clear by 3”, so yes you could carefully park it in there
What is the maximum operating altitude of R44 and why?
9,000 ft agl (14,000 ft density altitude)
It is to allow landing within 5 minutes in case of fire
Define Vne, Vy, Vh?
Vne: Never exceed speed
(130 KT) - 2200 lb togw and below
(120 KT) - over 2200 lb togw
(100 KT) - autorotation
Also reduced with altitude and temperature
Vy: Best rate of climb speed
Greatest gain of altitude in shortest time - 55 kts
Vh: stabilized level flight speed at max continuous power.
The highest speed the helicopter can maintain while using full power in level flight. Flying at Vh for extended periods not recommended due to increased fuel burn and stress on the aircraft
What is the necessity of having fuel tanks with bladders in the R44?
To prevent spills and leaks, more puncture resistant than without in case of accident
What is the Vne for autorotation at Okotoks at 5°C?
98 kts or 100 normal auto vne
What is the best autorotation speed?
65 kts
What is the best range speed combination with rotor RPM in R44?
Most miles for least fuel burn
100 KT
What is the best endurance speed combination with rotor RPM in R44?
Most time aloft, 108-109 KT?
What is the restriction of baggage weight to be placed in the compartment and why?
50 lbs, not sure
Give the actions for loss of tail rotor thrust in forward flight?
Failure is usually indicated by nose right yaw which cannot be corrected by applying left pedal.
1. Immediately enter autorotation.
2. Maintain at least 70 KIAS if practical.
3. Select landing site, roll throttle off into overtravel spring, and perform autorotation landing.
NOTE
When a suitable landing site is not available, the vertical stabilizers may permit limited controlled flight at low power settings and airspeeds above 70 KIAS; however, prior to reducing airspeed, enter full autorotation.
Give actions for alternator failure while you are 15 Nm away from the airport in Class C airspace?
Turn off all unnecessary electrical equipment, switch alternator off then on after one second, continued flight can result in loss of both tachs producing dangerous flight condition. Request landing with atc, or divert to closer airport if necessary
How do the tachs function without the alternator?
Through the clutch actuator switch and a special circuit direct to the battery
What procedures would you follow for noise abatement?
- avoid flying over assemblies of people, if necessary try to stay 2000 ft agl
- avoid blade slap, usually below speeds of 100 KT, until descent rate is 1000 fpm, then steep approach until below 65 KT
- avoid prolonged flight over nose sensitive areas
- vary flight path to not overly sane buildings twice
- look ahead and select least noise sensitive route
Calculation of Density Altitude?
Density altitude in feet = pressure altitude in feet + (120 x (OAT - ISA temperature))
Question on height velocity diagram?
Refer to FHZY POH
Question on performance graphs - IGE / OGE over?
Refer to FHZY POH
At what height AMSL does the throttle-collective correlation and governor become less effective?
6,000 ft section 7 poh
How does the correlator function in the R44?
Automatically adjusts throttle based on collective input, as you raise collective, correlator increases rpm, vice versa. Still works without small collective inputs and governor off
After how much time should the blades start turning with the clutch switch engaged?
5 seconds or less
What would happen if you operate a helicopter with excessive slack in the vee-belts?
Might not tension properly, could cause slippage and damage to belts or drive system
What is the function of the auxiliary fuel pump?
Primes the engine for starting, and runs in flight to provide fuel pump redundancy
Which fuel tank is filled first during refueling and why?
Main tank first because the auxiliary is gravity fed into the main tank
What is the recommended tire pressure in the ground handling wheels?
60 psi
What is the total capacity of engine oil in the R44 and at what frequency should it be changed?
Max 9 minimum 7, should be changed every 50 hours or 4 months, whichever comes first
Which engine oils can be used in the R44 and which grade of oil is recommended in the summers and in the winters?
What is the difference between MCP and MTOP?
MCP: Maximum Continuous Power,
The highest power level an engine can sustain for prolonged periods
MTOP: Maximum Takeoff Power
Time limited, highest power an engine can produce for a short time during takeoff
Where does the main rotor brake act on the aircraft?
What is the gross weight of the aircraft?
What is the difference between Gross Weight and Basic Empty Weight?
Gross Weight includes everything, Basic Empty Weight is the aircraft without payload
Where is the C of G located in the aircraft before departure?
What is the implication of forward C of G on the aircraft?
Requires more aft cyclic for flight, may not have enough cyclic available for autorotation or not be able to reduce speed to land
What is the implication of rearward C of G on the aircraft?
Requires extra forward cyclic, may not be possible to reach allowable forward airspeed, can cause dissymetry of lift and blade flapping which causes rotor disk to tilt at, causing loss of control and possible blades striking tail boom
Can a descent with high gross weight and forward C of G put you in any emergency condition?
Yes, you might not have enough rearward cycling left to slow down for landing
How will you ensure in the field that your aircraft is within C of G limits?
Weight and balance sheet? Hover check?
What is the minimum pilot weight to fly the R44?
150 lb
