POH EMERGENCIES AND SYSTEMS Flashcards
Explain the pitot static system
how do you tell if they are malfunctioning
The pitot static system supplies ram air pressure to the airspeed indicator and static pressure to the airspeed indicator, vertical speed indicator and altimeter.
One pitot static tube and to static ports.
Alternate static source valve is installed beneath the throttle and be used if static source is malfunctioning.
If the pitot is malfunctioning
PUDSUC
Pitot tube under read on a descent and Static vent under reads on a climb.
If the static isn’t working
VSI would read 0 and the ASI would freeze at the height where it stopped working
Explain vacuum and instruments
Engine driven vacuum system provides the suction necessary to operate attitude indicator and directional indicator
Vacuum pump mounted on the engine
Explain the brake system
Single disk, hydraulically actuated brake on each main landing gear wheel. Each brake is connected by hydraulic line to a master cylinder attached to the pilots rudder peddles
Explain the electrical system
28 volt direct current electrical system uses a battery located behind the rear cabin wall as the source of electrical energy and a belt driven 60 amp alternator to maintain the batteries state of state charge.
Power supplies to general electrical equipment and avionics through a primary bus bar and the avionics bus bar.
What does an ammeter do ?
An ammeter shoes the current in amperes from the alternator to the battery or from the battery to the airplane electrical system.
If the alternator has failed or the electrical load is over riding the output of the alternator the ammeter will show a discharge
What is the low voltage light for?
Light will illuminate when alternator isn’t working the battery will the supply the system current as shown by the electrical system load.
Emergency procedure for a fire on the ground?
Put the throttle full open then cut the mixture and continue to crank the engine
turn the master switch off
turn the ignition off
turn the fuel selector to off and extinguish the fire
then check for damage
Explain the emergency procedure for a engine fire in flight
Put the mixture in idle cut off and turn the fuel selector off then turn the master switch off as well as the cabin air.
Try to maintain an airspeed of 105 kts - if the fire is not extinguished increase the glide speed to find an airspeed which will provide an incombustible mixture
Land
What should you do during an electrical fire in flight
Turn the master switch off
Turn the avionics off and all other switched off
close the cabin air vents and heat off
then discharge the extinguisher on a closed cabin then ventilate the cabin
If the fire appears out and electrical power is necessary for continuance of the flight
Then turn the master switch on, check for faulty circuit breakers and turn the radio on and everything else one by one
Explain what you would do if you had to ditch
Set the elt to 121.1 and sqwaurk 7700
get rid of all heavy objects
landing gear up and set the flaps to 20 or 30, establish descent of 300ft at 60 kts
Approach high winds and heavy seas into wind and if its light wind heavy swell land parallel to swells
If not power is available approach at 70kts with flaps up at 65 kts with flaps 10
Unlatch the cabin doors
cover your face
and then once out inflate your life jacket
What do you do during an engine failure after take off
Turn throttle to idle, apple brakes and retract rings then put the mixture to idle cut off. Turn the ignition switch off and master switch off
What do you if the engine is running rough or you have a loss of power
An unexplained drop in manifold pressure and eventual roughness may result from the formation of carburettor ice. To clean the ice apply full throttle and pull the carburettor heat knob full out until the engine runs smooth.
Then remove the carburettor heat and readjust the throttle
If conditions require the continued use of carburettor heat in cruise flight must the minimum amount of heat necessary to prevent ice from forming and lean the mixture for the smoothest engine operation.
When would you suspect plug fouling
A slight engine roughness in flight may be caused by one or more spark plugs becoming fouled by carbon or lead deposits.
You can check this my turning the ignition switch into both L or right position
A loss in single ignition operation is spark plug or magneto trouble
Assuming spark plugs are more likely the cause lean the mixture to the recommend lean setting in flight.
If the problem does not clear up in several minutes determine if a richer mixture setting will produce smoother operation
Magneto Malfunction
Sudden engine roughness or misfiring is usually evidence of magneto problems
Switching from both to L or R will identify which magneto is malfunctioning.
Select the power settings and enriched the mixture to determine if continued operation on both magnetos is okay.
If not switch to one magneto and go to nearest airport
What should you do during a engine driven pump failure
In the event of failure gravity flow will provide sufficient fuel flow for level or descending flight
When climbing attitude the fuel pressure drops below 0.5 psi the auxiliary fuel pump should be turned on
