Stanza
Two-line stanza.
Couplet
Four-line stanza.
Quatrain

Octave
Repetition of word or phrase in beginning of successive lines or stanzas.
Anaphora
Poem that tells a story through the voice of a narrator.
Narrative Poem
Poem characterized by expression of poet’s feelings, told through a speaker.
Lyric Poem
14 line lyric poem.
Sonnet
14 line lyric poem comprised of an octave and a sestet (rhyme scheme abbaabba cdecde or abbaabba cdcdcd).
Italian / Petrarchan sonnet
14 line lyric poem comprised of three quatrains and a final rhyming couplet in scheme abab cdcd efef gg.
English / Shakespearean / Elizabethan sonnet
A sonnet’s turning point. (in start of sestet for Italian, in start of couplet for English)

Literary approach that follows traditional forms.
Formalism
Poetry without standardized rhymes, metre or structure.

Literary approach that employs traditional forms with some twists.
