What are some poetic devices?
Alliteration, Assonance, Anaphora, Cacophony, Euphony, Rhyme and Rhythm.
What are “Alliteration” and it’s effect?
The repetition of the beginning sound of 2 or more worlds placed near one another. To inject mood or emotion into a piece of writing
What are “Assonance” and it’s effect?
The repetition of the vowel sounds in words that are in close proximity to each other. to grasp the reader’s attention to a particular phrase and it helps to exaggerate the meaning of that phrase.
What are “Anaphora” and it’s effect?
Repetition of the first world or clause of consecutives sentences. Engaging your audience in a particular emotional experience.
What are “Cocophony” and it’s effect?
Combination of harsh, chaotic, and / or discordant (unharmonious) sounds. (E.g. “k”, “g”, “b”, “t”, “ch” and “sh”). Encourages the reader to really feel the trouble of the story
What are “Enjambment” and it’s effect?
When a sentence runs into the next line or stanza. Aids in building drama.
What are “Rhyme” and it’s effect?
Last sound of a word being repeated in other words. Creates rhythm and makes the poem more memorable. It also aid in establishing a certain atmosphere.
What are “Rhythm “ and it’s effect?
Refers to the pattern of sounds in a poem. It aids in creating tone in poem as well as generating emotions and enhance ideas.
What are “Euphony” and it’s effect?
Words that work together to create a harmonious and pleasing sounds to the ears. (E.g. Larger vowels like “a” and “o” and soft constants “m”, “r” and “l” sound more melodious. It is used to create calm, pleasants and even magical auditory imagery. (E.g. “I”, “ee”, “i” sounds in miles, sleep, lovely) = aids in giving a dream-like vibe.
