What is the main clinical sign of Guillian Barre Syndrome
Ascending Weakness
Question to ask pt who is thought to have Guillian Barre?
Have you had a recent viral or bacterial infection
1 priority intervention for GBS?
Maintain adequate respiratory function
Will a pt recover from GBS?
Yes, but recovery is slow
What is Myasthenia Gravis?
Chronic progressive autoimmune disorder characterized by weakness and rapid fatigue of any muscles under your voluntary control.
What is the etiology of MG?
Antibodies block the receptor sites for acetylcholine
A MG pt will have more strength in the AM or the PM?
AM
S&S for MG?
facial muscle weakness-ptosis, muscle weakness in arms and legs, difficulty breathing, swallowing, and chewing
What is Tensilon testing?
Tensilon is given and MG pt shows marked improvement in muscle tone
What can be removed to try and help the MG? What is it called?
Thymus, Thymectomy
What is a Myasthenic crisis?
an exacerbation of myasthnic symptoms caused by an undermedication
What is Cholinergic crisis?
an acute exacerbation of muscle weakness caused by an over medication
What is the antidote for Tensilon?
Atropine
Priority after given Atropine?
Suctioning r/t drying of secretions
Trigeminal Neuralgia affects which cranial nerve?
5th cranial nerve
