PNS Flashcards
What is the PNS split into?
. Somatic
.Autonomic (Sympathetic + parasympathetic)
What is the purpose of somatic?
. Conscious actions, from the senses e.g visual information as well as directing muscles to move
What is the purpose of autonomic including symp and para
. Autonomic is responsible for unconscious bodily functions e.g breathing and digestion
. Sympathetic is used when the body is aroused
. Parasympathetic used when the body is needed to relax
How do impulses travel down a neuron?
IMPULSE—>DENDRITES—>CELL BODY——> AXON—-> TERMINAL BRANCHES—-> SYNAPSE ——-> DENDRITES OF POST SYNAPTIC NEURON
Function of motor neuron?
Carry impulse from the CNS to other areas of body to control muscles
Purpose of relay neuron?
. Lie in between sensory and motor and connect them
Purpose of the sensory neuron?
.Transmit nerve impulses from sensory receptors to the brain and spinal cord
Process of synaptic transmission?
.information passed down the axon of a neuron as action potential
.once it reaches the end of the axon it needs to cross the synaptic gap
.at the end of the neuron are synaptic vesicles which contain neurotransmitters
.the impulse stimulates the release of the neurotransmitter
. The neurotransmitter then carry the signal across synaptic gap and bind to receptor on site of post synaptic cell
.once reached post synaptic neuron they are either excitatory or inhibitory
What is inhibitory?
Makes neurotransmitter LESS likely to fire
What is excitatory?
Neurotransmitters make the post synaptic cell more likely to fire
