PNS Flashcards
What is the PNS made up of?
everything outside the brain and spinal cord!! (lots of RECEPTORS)
-sensory receptors
-nerves + ganglion
-efferent motor endings
What are sensory receptors?
Specialized structures that respond to stimuli in an enviorment by sending impulses in afferent neurons to CNS
Receptor based off stimulus it detetcs:
Mechanoreceptors
detect touch, pressure, vibrations
Receptor based off stimulus it detetcs:
Thermoreceptors
detect temp changes
Receptor based off stimulus it detetcs:
Photoreceptors
detect light energy
Receptor based off stimulus it detetcs:
Chemoreceptors
detect chemicals in smell and air
-blood chm changes
Receptor based off stimulus it detetcs:
Nociceptors
detect damaging stimuli that result in pain
Receptor based of location:
Exteroceptors
sensitive to stimuli OUTSIDE body
Receptor based of location:
Interoceptors
Sensitve to stimuli IN the body
Receptor based of location:
Proprioceptors
sensitve to internal stimuli in skeletal muscle, tendons, joints, and ligs in bones and muscles
Simple receptors
modified nerve endings of sensory neuorns
skin, mucous membranes, muscles, connective tissue
complex receptors
special senses of vision, hearing, smell
Endoneurium
encloses each axon
fascicles
a bundle of axons
perineurium
covers a fasicle
