PNS Flashcards
Supply dorsum of neck and back
Dorsal rami
Supply anterior and lateral regions of neck and trunk and all regions of limbs
Ventral rami
Rami of spinal nerves are lateral branches and contain
Both sensory and motor
Ventral rami except t2-t12 branch and join one another lateral to vertebral column forming
Nerve fibers within it diverge from it forming terminal branch nerves and travel to their end destination
Nerve plexus
Lies deep to SCM muscle and formed by ventral rami of first 4 cervical nerves
Terminal branches arise from it are cutaneous nerves carry sensory impulses from skin of neck, back of head, and superior of shoulder
Cervical plexus
Motor nerve from cervical plexus
Provides motor innervation to diaphragm
Phrenic nerve
Gives rise to nerve that supply upper limb
Roots: ventral rami from spinal nerves C5-T1
Branches: musculocutaneous nerve, median nerve, ulnar nerve, radial nerve, axillary nerve
Brachial plexus
Terminal branches of the brachial plexus
Musculocutaneous, median , ulnar, axillary nerves
Terminal branch of lateral cord of brachial plexus
Provides motor innervation to muscles in anterior compartment of arm
Provides cutaneous sensation to lateral forearm
Passes through Coracobrachialis muscle and descends between biceps brachii and brachialis
Musculocutaneous nerve
Terminal brain of medial and lateral cords of brachial plexus
Provides motor innervation to muscles in anterior compartment of forearm
Provides cutaneous sensation to lateral part of anterior hand
Passes through carpal tunnel at wrist
Median nerve
Terminal branch of medial cord of brachial plexus
Provides motor innervation to only 2 muscles in anterior compartment of forearm
Provides cutaneous sensation to anterior and posterior portions of medial hand
Passes posterior to medial epicondyle of humerus
Ulnar nerve
Terminal branch of posterior cord of brachial plexus
Motor innervation to deltoid and Teres minor
Provides cutaneous sensation to lateral shoulder
Passes posterior to surgical neck of humerus
Axillary nerve
Terminal branch of posterior cord of brachial plexus
Provides motor innervation to posterior compartment of arm and forearm
Provides cutaneous sensation to dorso lateral surface of wrist and posterolateral side of hand
Wraps around posterior humerus and runs in radial groove sending branches to triceps brachii
At elbow curves anteriorly around lateral epicondyle of humerus
Superficial branch descends underneath brachii radialis muscle supplies at anatomical snuff box
Radial nerve
Humeral fractures at these locations
Surgical neck of humerus- axillary
Radial groove - radial
Medial epicondlye - ulnar
Distal end - median
Level of nipples
