PNF & Bobath Concept Flashcards
What are the 5 guiding principles of PNF?
- Positive approach
- help patient reach the highest level of function
- mobilise potential via intensive active training
- consider the total human being
- incoporate motor control and motor learning principles (e.g. postural control, which stage of learning)
what are the basic principles of neurophysiology?
- after discharge
- temporal summation
- spatial summation
- irradiation
- successive induction
- reciprocal inhibition
How does traction or approximatin helps with movement in PNF?
Traction: increase muscular response and promote movement or proximal stabilisation.
Approximation (compression): promote stabilisation, facilitates weight-bearing and the contraction of anti-gravity muscles.
Whats the goal of the following techniques:
- Rhythmic initiation
- Dynamic reversal
- Hold-relax
Rhythmic initiation: learn a new movement, initiate a movement
Dynamic reversal: increase muscle contraction, endurance & strength
Hold-relax: increase PROM, flexibility.
Is PNF effective as an intervention?
PNF shown to be effective in improving gait speed and balance during walking. More studies required to investigate its effectiveness in improving UL function.
Another studies showed that PNF helps to improve ADLs ability.
What is the principle or goal behind the Bobath concept?
- influencing/normalising muscle tone through afferent input (facilitation).
- modify the way a task is performed through handling and activation to make it more efficient, effective and successful for the individual.
