Management: primary pneumothorax where patient is not SOB and pneumothorax <2cm
Discharged and outpatient review
Management: primary pneumothorax patient is SOB or pneumothorax >2cm
Aspiration with a 16-18 G cannula under local anaesthetic
Successful = discharge and unsuccessful = intercostal drain
Management: Tension pneumothorax
Immediate needle decompression using a 16 gauge cannula inserted at 2nd intercostal space mid-clavicular line
Management: Secondary pneumothorax, patient not SOB and pneumothorax <1cm
Admitted and observed for 24 hours
Management: secondary pneumothorax patient not SOB and pneumothorax 1-2 cm
Aspiration and 24hr observation
Management; secondary pneumothorax patient SOB and >2cm
Intercostal drain and admit
