Lower Resp Tract Infection affecting alveoli.
Classification of Pneumonia?
CAP: outside hospital
HAP: presents >48h AFTER Admission
Aspiration: inhaled foreign object
Interpreting CURB-65 score?
<2: consider home management
≥2: consider hospital admission
≥3: Admit to ICU
Investigating suspected pneumonia?
1) FBC, U+Es, CRP (Bloods)
2) CXR (patchy consolidation)
3) Blood + Sputum cultures
4) Atypical Screen - Legionella/Pneumococcal urinary antigen
Management of Pneumonia?
1) Assess Severity: CURB-65 Score + Judgement
2) Antibiotics: local guidelines
Low: Oral Amoxicillin - 5 days
Moderate: Amoixcillin + Clarithromycin 7-10 days
Severe: IV broad spectrum antibiotics + consult seniors
Distinguishing signs of Pneumonia?
Productive Cough, Fever, Gradual Onset Sharp Chest Pain, Hemoptysis, Dyspnoea + Confusion
