Pneumonia Flashcards
Define bronchopneumonia
An exudative lesion of the broncho-alveolar junction.
Neutrophils +/- fibrin, macrophages in air spaces
Name the different possible types of bronchopneumonia
fibrinous (predominant exudate is fibrinous)
suppurative (predominant exudate is neutrophilic)
What lobes of the lung does bronchopneumonia affect ?
cranioventral lobes
all lesions in cranioventral lung are bronchopneumonia until proven otherwise
( due to inspiration pattern as bacteria are breathed in to affect )
Define interstitial pneumonia
acute, rapidly progressive idiopathic pulmonary disease.
caused by bacteria, viruses or fungi
What lobes of the lung does interstitial pneumonia affect ?
all lobes
Define embolic pneumonia
infectious agents arrive haematogenously, therefore pattern follows the BVs
What lobes of the lung does embolic pneumonia affect?
all lobes
Define granulomatous pneumonia
pneumonia with a granulomatous infiltrate
What lobes of the lung does granulomatous pneumonia affect
all lobes
Gross appearance of bronchopneumonia
dark red-purple
may ooze fluid
firm texture (congestion)
may be lobular or lobar
mass of necrotic lung, often separated by purulent exudate and fibrous capsule
Gross appearance of interstitial pneumonia
lungs are dilated and puffy
can see the interstitium clearly even from the outside of the lung, appears white and thickened
Gross appearance of embolic pneumonia
multifocal, rounded foci of necrosis, inflammation, abscessation
may find nidus of infection or embolic abscesses in other tissues
Gross appearance of granulomatous pneumonia
green-yellow areas of granulomatous inflammation and infection
Define aspiration pneumonia
inhalation of foreign material
response depends on the material
lesions are similar to those of bronchopneumonia but usually asymmetrical
