Pasteurella Flashcards

Bacterial Resp Diseases IV

1
Q

Structure ?

A

Gram-, rod or coccobacilli, facultative anaerobic, oxidase + (set them apart from other families)
“morse code” appearance of dots and dashes in Gram stain
some species produce toxins
have capsule and adhesins

Q

Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD), aka “shipping fever”. give
- pathogenesis
- detection method
- gross appearance
- histology

A

Pathogenesis involved stress factors interacting to suppress host defence mechanisms, leading to proliferation

farm staff evaluate stock health subjectively based on appearance and behaviour (limited sensitivity)

severe bronchopneumonia with areas of RBC lysis

no normal airway present, congestion and infiltrating neutrophils present, fibrin deposition of fibrin

Q

Atrophic Rhinitis
- two types
- CS
- grading system

A

non-progressive (mild and transient, little effect)
progressive (toxigenic strain, severe and permanent)

  • poor growth
  • sneezing, coughing, inflammation of lacrimal duct
  • nasal haemorrhage
  • lateral deviation or shortening of the jaw
  • turbinate atrophy

inflammation of the nares and atrophy (due to toxins) can be graded (0-4) in terms of increasing severity
