Pneumocystosis Carinii Pneumonia Flashcards
PCP was classified as a protozoa but now as
Fungi
It is an extracellular opportunistic. Explain
Extracellular means it does not invade the cell and it infect immunocompromised people
Who is the host?
Man
Habitat?
Lungs in alveolar
Multiplication of PCP is by
Binary fission
What is the mode of infection?
Droplet inhalation
What is the morphology (infective and invasive form) ?
Infective - cyst
Invasive - trophozite
Sporozoite is within cyst which spwhen released becomes trophozoite
Microscopic of infected lung in adults and malnourished infants
In adults: Thicken alveolar, infiltrated with plasma cell, organism in alveoli.
In malnourished child: predominantly interstitial component infected
Both have organisms intermingle with alveolar macrophages in the exudate
What is the sensation of death due to PCP?
Asphyxia: drowning due to exudate
How to diagnose the patient?
Bronco alveolar lavage (BAL)
Induced sputum
Open lung biopsy
What stain used in BAL that gives black and blue color?
Silver stain
What treatment should we give?
trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole - cotrimoxazole (high dose)
