Holy Spirit
One of the three persons of the Trinity whose work it is to manifest the active presence of God in the word, and especially in the church.
Acts 1:8, “And you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you.”

Holy Spirit’s Work in Unbelievers
Conviction of sin: John 16:8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:
Common grace: Matthew 5:45 “For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.”
Holy Spirit’s Work in Believers
The Holy Spirit gives life, power for service, revelation, evidence of God’s presence, guidance and direction, assurance, he teaches and he illuminates, and he unifies.
The Holy Spirit gives life
(John 3:6, “born of Spirit is spirit”)
The Holy Spirit gives power for service
(Acts 1:8, “You shall receive power when the HS has come upon you”),
The Holy Spirit gives revelation
2 Peter 1:21, “men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit”
The Holy Spirit gives evidence of God’s presence
Rom 8:16, “The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God”
The Holy Spirit gives guidance and direction
Romans 8:14, “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.”
Galatians 5:16, “But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”
The Holy Spirit gives assurance
1 John 4:13, “By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.”
Eph 1:14, “is the guarantee of our inheritance”
The Holy Spirit teaches and he illuminates
“John 14:26, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.”
The Holy Spirit unifies
Ephesians 4:4-6, “There is one body and one Spirit–just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call– one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
Grieving the Holy Spirit
Ephesians 4:30 “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”
1 Thessalonians 5:19 “Do not quench the Spirit.”
Acts 7:51 “You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit.”
Fruit of the Holy Spirit
Galatians 5:22-23 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”
Gifts of the Holy Spirit
A spiritual gift is any ability that is empowered by the Holy Spirit and used in any ministry of the church
1 Cor. 12:28, “God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues”
1 Cor. 12:8-10, word of wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discerning spirits, tongues, interpretation
Eph 4:11, apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor-teacher
Romans 12:6-8, prophecy, serving, teaching, encouraging, contributing, leadership, mercy

Gift of Tongues
Prayer or praise spoken in syllables not understood by speaker
1 Cor. 14:14 Spirit prays, mind is unfruitful
