Definition of Angel
A created, spiritual being with moral judgment and high intelligence, but without a physical body
Verses about Angels
Psalms 34:7 “The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them.”
Luke 1-2 – announcing the birth of Jesus
Definition of Demons and Verse
Evil angels who sinned against God and who now continually work evil in the world.
2 Peter 2:4 “For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment”
Satan
The personal name of the head of the demons.
Job 1, Zec 3, Isaiah 14, Ezekiel 28, Luke 10:18 “And he said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.”
Demon Possession
Unfortunate rendering of δαιμονίζομαι – it could mean possession as we think of it or influenced
Inspiration
The words of Scripture are spoken by God. ‘God-breathed’ is sometimes preferred because performances or speakers are sometimes called ‘inspired’.
Verses: 2 Tim 3:16; Messenger Format - Thus says the Lord; 2 Peter 1:20, ‘Men spoke from god as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.’
Inerrancy
The idea that Scripture in the original manuscripts does not affirm anything that is contrary to fact.
Numbers 23:19 ‘God is not man, that he should lie.’
clarity of Scripture Or Perspicuity
The idea that the Bible is written in such a way that its teachings are able to be understood by all who will read it seeking God’s help and being willing to follow it.
Ps 1, Duet 6:47 – Children should be taught Scripture
Authority of Scripture
The idea that all the words in Scripture are God’s words in such a way that to disbelieve or disobey any word of Scripture is to disbelieve or disobey God.
Verses: Exodus 32:16 ‘The tablets were the work of God’; Jem 1:2 ‘The word of the Lord came’
necessity of Scripture
The idea that the Bible is necessary for knowing the gospel, for maintaining spiritual life, and for knowing God’s will, but is not necessary knowing that God exists or for knowing something about God’s character and moral laws.
Romans 15:4 ‘For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.’
Also Verses: Romans 10:13-17 ‘everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved … so faith comes from what is heard.’; Deut 8:3, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’
Sufficiency of Scripture
The idea that Scripture contained all the words of God he intended his people to have at each stage of redemptive history, and that it now contains all the words of God we need for salvation, for trustling him perfectly, and for obeying him perfectly.
Verses: Due 4:2, 12:31 – do no add to the words of this book; Prov 30:5-6 – do not add to his words, lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar
Canon
The list of all the books that belong in the Bible (from the Greek κανών, G2834, ‘reed; measuring rod; standard of measure’
Josephus (born 37/38 AD) – 22 books
Verses: 1 Cor. 14:37 – Paul writes ‘a command from the Lord’; 2 Peter 3:16 - Paul’s writing are scripture; 1 Tim 5:17-18 – Quotes both OT and Luke – do no muzzle the ox and the laborer deserves his wages
Illumination of the Holy Spirit
Verses: 1 Cor. 2 – the Spirit reveals God – 1 Corinthians 2:12 ‘Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.’
Total Depravity Or total inability.
Man’s total lack of spiritual good and inability to do good before God. Rom. 3:10 “no one is righteous.” Rom 3:23, “all have sinned.” Is. 53:6, “all we like sheep have gone astray.” Eph. 2:1-3, “we were all by nature children of God’s wrath.”
Sin
Any failure to conform to the moral law of God in act, attitude, or nature.
Verse: Romans 14:23 “For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin.”
