Plugs Flashcards
What is the bottom left wire
Neutral this is the blue wire.
What is the first top wire called and what does it do
This is the earth wire. It’s is green and yellow. This protects the plug from danger.
What si the bottom right wire
Live this is the brown wire
What is the cable grip and what is it for
It is to stop the wires coming loose and being pulled out
What is the fuse and what is it for
The fuse is the bit that protects the plug. It breaks if something goes wrong.
Why is glass used for the fuse
So you can see if it’s broken and it doesn’t melt and it’s a instil stir
What are the wrong things for a plug (the faults)
If you can see the metal
If the end of the wire is loose
Rubber is loose on plug
Electric currents allow you to…
Plug appliances into mains supply
Draw electricity from mains supply
What is insulation
Have insulation in all plugs. Cables and plugs are made from plastic to insulate the user from the electricity
What is double insulation
When the appliance is coated in plastic as well as the plug and cable
What is earthing
If an appliance has metal, it needs to be earth. A fault could cause live wire to touch metal case. If appliance is earthed, a large current flows through the earth wire and melts the fuse.
What is the fuses
A fault in the appliance can cause current to be too great- fires and stuff could happen. A fuse is designed to melt if a current is too high, and it breaks the circuit.
What is the circuit breaker?
Just like a fuse, this breaks the circuit when there is a power surge. Circuit breakers are usually electromagnets so the can be easily reset
Why is copper used?
It’s a good conductor, and is easy to bend. Cheap
The wires are covered in flexible plastic. Why is plastic used?
So electricity doesn’t go elsewhere. Plastic is insulator , protects it
