Cognitive Style
Determines how we best learn, four different types
Learning Style; Visual, auditory, tactile, kinesthetic
What does KOLB’s theory of learning style include?
Concrete Experiences: being involved in a new experience
Reflective Observation: Watching others and development observations about their experience
Abstract Conceptualization: creating theories to explain observations
Active Experimentation: uses theories to solve problems/make decisions
2 types of performance modes
Concrete/Operational Thinkers
Visual and Aural Learners
Gender differences in learning styles
*how do these affect learning?
Girls emphasize memorization; boys learn more by elaboration strategies
Girls perform well in reading, less in math; opposite for boys
Girls express emotions with words; boys through actions
Some issues that a culturally-sensitive teacher needs to consider
Self-esteem
types of teaching methods
working with other students
flow/order of classroom
Types of elaboration strategies
Mnemonic Devices Rewriting Note-Making (organizing notes in own words after) Comparisons Self-questioning
Difference in disabilities and handicaps
Disability: physical state or condition that result in impairment of functioning
Handicap: disabilities between handicaps when they interfere with an individual’s ability to function in specific situations
A disorder that affects the ability to process information; may result in inattention, preselection, issues in memory, listening, reading, spelling
learning disability
*know general disabilities from Ex Learner
*know categories (ex. dyslexia under learning disability)
Says that no person, by reason of handicap, shall be denied participation in, benefits of, or subjected to discrimination of any service, program, ora activities covered by law
ADA (Americans w Disabilities Act)
Passed originally in 1975; ensures all children have FAPE
IDEA (individuals with disabilities education act)
FAPE: Free, appropriate public ed
inclusion of special students in general ed classes
Mainstreaming
LRE
Least restrictive environment; students are placed in an educational setting closest to mainstream as possible for the student
Written educational plan that specifies a students’ current levels of performance, goals, and short-term instructional objectives; prepared by a team that includes students’ parents teachers, and (if appropriate) the student
IEP (individualized education plan)
What is required to be in an IEP
- PLOP
- annual goals
- child’s progress
- services and aid required
- modifications required
- individual accommodations
- projected date and frequency of services
What is differentiated instruction?
Instruction is taught in ways that can be understood by multiple students; taught in multiple ways, assessed in multiple ways because we know students differ in learning styles
Any type of assessment where students create a response to a question or a task rather than students simply choosing a response
Alternative assessment; performance assessment, essays, short answers, presentations, demonstrations, portfolios
T/F Special arrangements and modifications can be used for score enhancement
F
**
Modifications that are not routinely used during instructional day and during classroom testing are not appropriate during state-mandated testing
Difference in English immersion and English as a second language
English Immersion: information only taught in English
English as a second language: instruction may be in English, but also may have support in native languages
Type of language acquisition process where instruction is in students’ native language, but there is also instruction on developing english skills
Transitional Bilingual Education Instruction
Important things to consider when teaching diverse groups of students
Multicultural background family background student culture at school linguistic patterns/differences cognitive patterns/differences social/emotional issues
Sense that one is doomed to fail based on past experience; stifles motivation and prevents people from attempting new tasks
Learned helplessness
