Pleural Disease Flashcards
pneumothorax
air in the pleural space
soft tissue pleural diseases
neoplasia
diaphragmatic hernia
abscess
pleural effusion
fluid in the pleural space
what are the clinical signs of pleural disease
- rapid shallow breathing
- asynchronous breathing
- dull to absent lung sounds
what is a pleural bleb/bullae
alveoli weaken and break down causing it to rupture at the lung surface –> releases gas into the pleural space
what is glide sign
hyperechoic line depicting the sliding of the visceral pleura (lung) against the parietal pleura (chest wall)
how does pneumothorax affect glide sign
loss of glide sign because there is now air between the visceral and parietal pleura
transudate
low cellularity, low protein effusion
modified transudate
moderate cellularity
high protein
exudate
high cellularity, high protein fluid
hemothorax, pyothorax, chylothorax, FIP
what lung lobe is most prone to torsion
left cranial lung lobe
what breed is prone to lung lobe torsion and which lung lobe affects them
pugs - right middle lung lobe
what is the most common type of organism to cause a pyothorax
bacteria > fungi
what bacterial organisms cause pyothorax commonly
aerobes: pasteurella, E. coli, actinomyces, strep, staph
anaerobes
mycoplasma (cats w/ pleuropneumonia)
treatment of pyothorax in cats
thoracostomy tube + antibiotics
if fails –> CT + exploratory surgery
