Plato Flashcards
What are Forms?
Immutable eternal essences from which objects (particulars) are based upon
What is the relation between Forms and particulars?
All objects either imitate or participate with a Form
Why aren’t objects reality in themselves?
They are in a constant state of flux - always changing
What is the Form Good?
1) Source of all our knowledge
2) Gives forms their perfectness
3) The force which unites the Forms
4) First principle of everything
What is knowledge for Plato?
Episteme - infallible, cannot be otherwise. It is about what is real, rather than ignorance which is about nothing. Directly refers to the Forms
What is opinion for Plato?
Doxa - belief, can be mistaken. Between knowledge and ignorance is about something. Refers to the material realm
What is the divided line?
The line between realm of the Forms and the material realm which distinguish the mental states associated with them:
1) Knowledge/intelligence and thinking are in the realm of Forms
2) Belief and imagining are in material realm
Arguments from imperfection
Our world is imperfect, so we must have innate ideas of what perfect is so that we can recognise things when they eventually change. These a priori concepts are of the Forms and allow us to have a continued grasp on what things are
Argument from unmistakability
Equal sticks and stones can appear to be unequal, whereas equality by definition cannot. Perceptual knowledge (particulars) is therefore often mistaken whereas conceptual knowledge (Forms) is not
Argument from Recollection
Meno’s slave - recollecting knowledge of the Forms
Hare’s criticism
The Good and the Right exist in the Greek language, however we shouldn’t mistake this peculiarity of language to make the unconscious slight into concluding they are existing properties.
Criticism of knowledge and opinion
Knowledge and opinion may have different faculties doesn’t mean they are possess different objects. We can redefine knowledge = justified true belief and opinion = unjustified false belief to show their relation
Criticism of certainty
We do not need to hold knowledge to such a high threshold - we can accept knowledge = justified true belief
Criticism of coherency
Participation: If the Form Mountain participates in two mountains, then surely it has splintered - not necessarily, it can be day in two places but one source
Reductio ad absurdum
If there is a form of man and abstract values like goodness, then there must be one of woman, and blonde hair woman, and etc. infinite regress with a form for every instance of everything
