Q

How is a mid ocean ridge formed?

A

As plates are pulling apart from each other, lava will fill the gap meaning that a big volcano can’t form as the lava don’t have time to pile up lots on top of each other as plates constantly pulling apart

Q

How is a rift valley formed?

A

1) plates are pulling apart from each other, which pushes up steam and gasses from the magma chamber, as tension faults and cracks appear
2) because the two plates are pulling apart so land sinks but the very middle gets pushed up because of pressure in the middle
3) as plates continue to pull apart a rift valley eventually forms (which is the sunken land), these continue to grow in size are some are MASSIVE

Q

Why are rift valleys generally very green land?

A

Because of the change in altitude, snow/ice melts onto the soil from mountains above giving the land moisture. Volcanic material is very fertile

7
Q

Why do conservative plate boundaries only have one land feature?

A

Even though they get really powerful earthquakes, a lack of subduction of upwelling material at conservative margins means very little is visible in terms of landforms

13
Q

What happens when you having two oceanic plates ?

A

As they are moving towards each other, one is force under the other (subduction). The crust that is being sub ducted will be the one that is slightly denser (not much as they are the same density), or the one moving a bit quicker.

16
Q

What happens when you have an oceanic and a continental plate?

A

The oceanic crust (denser) will subduct the continental crust into the upper mantle.

17
Q

What tectonic features occur at oceanic + continental plates ?

A

Deep ocean trenches (6km deep)
Fold mountains (as pressure put onto the continental crust can cause it to buckle upwards)
Explosive volcanoes

18
Q

What happens when you have two continental plates (collision)

A

Continental plates are of lower density than the asthenosphere beneath them … meaning subduction cannot occur, instead them collide with each other.

19
Q

What tectonic features occur at two continental plates?

A

Very powerful earthquakes
Fold mountains (sediment scraped off sea floor between the plates are compressed and get pushed upwards)

20
Q

What is an example of a collision plate boundary ?

A

The HIMALAYAS
