Q

Why were the impacts so severe?

A
  • as everyone thought they would be safe from the hurricane because on October 28th it began to move north-East, which was back out to sea rather than towards the land. As a result of this no preparations and precautions were put in place to a high extent. And on the 29th, the storm got pushed and turned west ward towards the east coast of America. Therefore, this sudden change gave less than 12 hours to prepare before the storm hit land

  • told people to have a good supply of torches and batteries
  • tried to prevent long term power outages by getting electricians to work overtime

Q

What did the American Red Cross to in response to sandy?

A
  • they didn’t show up in some places till 2 weeks after, this is because they responded to another hurricane a week before sandy so the response was much slower
  • the vehicles were used as a backdrop to press conferences for Barack Obama and weren’t actually going out to help people
  • they sent out 17.5 million meals and snacks
  • 7 million relief items e.g. thermal blanket, hats, gloves
