Q

Divergent and constructive plate

A

Boundaries are when two plates separate. Magma rises to fill the gap that’s when volcanoes and mid-ocean ridges are formed.

Q

Mid ocean ridges

A

Mid-ocean ridges are geologically active, with new magma constantly emerging onto the ocean floor and into the crust at the end near rifts along the ridge axes. The crystallised magma forms new crust of basalt.
The rocks making up the crust below the sea floor are the youngest at the axis of the ridge and age with increasing distance from that axis.

Q

Iceland - a volcanic island

A

Iceland is one of the few places where the mid Atlantic ridge is exposed above sea level, it is only about 20 million years old.
Surtsey is a volcanic island that appeared at first above sea level in an eruption in 1963

Q

Lava

A

When magma reaches the surface it’s is known as lava.

Lava pours through the crater and flows down the side of the cone.
