Mass Movement Flashcards
Influences on mass movement. When is it fastest?
Mass movement is fastest when the slope is steep.
Mass movement and what does it include
Is the movement of any loose material down slope under the influence of gravity.
This loose material includes loose rock mud and soil and is known as a regolith
What does water act as?
Water acts as a lubricant making the regolith heavier and the surface slippery.
What may create a steeper slope?
Cutting into hillsides during the construction of roads and railways may create a steeper slope.
Vedgitation
The roots of trees and plants build the soil together and slows down the rate of mass movement.
How is mass movement classified?
It's is classified by speed. Soil creep Slow Land slides Fast Bog bursts Fast Mudflows Fast
Where can Soil creep occur?
Can occur on very gentle slopes.
How is it noticed? (Soil creeps)
Might not be noticed except for the effect it has on surface objects eg. Learning poles, fences or walls
Where is soil creep greatest?
Soil creep is greatest near the surface and decreases with depth.
How do Landslides occur?
Sudden rapid movement of regolith down a slope.
May also occur along the coast line cliffs which have been undermined by sea erosion.
Where is landslides found?
Most common in mountain areas.
Cause of landslides
A road or railway cutting into steep slopes
What is a Bogburst?
A bog burst is the movement of peat down a hillside.
How is a Bog burst caused?
It is caused by heavy rain saturating the peat. Can be caused by human activity such as excavation.
Where can a mudflow occur?
It can occur on both gentle and steep slopes.
