Plate Tectonics🌪🪐 Flashcards
What is plate tectonics
This is a scientific term for movement of tectonic plates
What are tectonic plates
These are large crustal blocks of the earths lithosphere which are capable of movement
What are the places which the plates meet or separate
Plate boundaries / tectonic boundaries
What are the three major boundaries
Convergent margins
Destructive margins
Collision margins
Describe collisions margins
Where continental plates are colliding
Describe destructive margin
Where an oceanic and continental plate collide and oceanic plate is destroyed
What is the transform boundary / conservative Margin and describe it
The margin were plated are sliding past each other
There is neither creation or destruction of the crust
Describe Second collision margin
It’s where 2 continental plates collide with each other and the result is formation of fold mountains and earth quakes
Describe destructive margin
I’m this margin. , a continental plate collided with an oceanic plate.
The denser oceanic plate sinks below the continental plate and as it sinks it experiences heat from friction combined within the mantle which is enough to melt the oceanic plate
What is a trench
A point in which oceanic plate sinks and develops a depression
What is a subduction zone
A zone in which the plate is sinking and getting destroyed
What are the results of movement ( destructive margin )
Oceanic plate is destroyed
Earthquakes results from collision
Trench is formed
Volcanoes are formed -( oceanic plate melting magma )
New rock material
Fold mountains as a result of plates colliding
