Infiltration Flashcards
What is infiltration
Infiltration is the process by which water on the ground surface enters the soil
What is the infiltration a capacity
The infiltration capacity is defined as the maximum rate of infiltration
What is it measured in
It is more often measured in meters per day
How does the infiltration capacity decrease
It decreases as the soil moisture content of soil surface layers increase
When does runoff occur
Runoff occurs when precipitation rate exceeds infiltration rate
What is infiltration caused by
Gravity , capillary forces , osmosis , and adsorption and soil characteristics
What is an infiltrometer
A device used to measure the rate of water infiltrating into the soil
What are the commonly used infiltrometers.
Single ring and double ring
How does the infiltrometer work
Water is supplied to the ring and is allowed to drop with time
This is done with a Marriottes bottle
The operator records how much water goes into the soil for a given time period
