Erosion ---> Etc Flashcards
Describe hydraulic action
They force water into cracks in the rock , under pressure . This helps to break the rock up .
This is hydraulic action
What is a solution
The water that dissolves soluble material from the rock
What is abrasion
When sand , pebbles and large stones scrape against the rock ,wearing it away . This is called abrasion
What is attrition
Chunks of rock get knocked together and work into smaller and smaller bits . They end up as shingle or sand
What is human activity
The increase in pressure resulting from building on cliff tops and the removal of beach material
What is deposition
โโ-
What is coastal deposition
This is when the sea drops or deposits material. This can include , sediment and shingle
What does coastal deposition result in
Formation of landform of coastal deposition
When does deposition happen
When the swash is stronger than the backwash and is associated with constructive waves ๐
Spit feature.
What is it
Spit is a long narrow ridges of sand and shingle which is projected into the sea from coastline
Describe Spit formation
Longshore drift transports material along the coastline
Spits formed in shallow and sheltered water when there is a change in direction of coastline
Deposition occurs resulting in rise of shingle and sand.
Finer material is then formed which helps build up the rest of the spit
As it grows , wind direction changes and results in the forming of the spit
Sally marsh may form in the sheltered low energy zone behind spit
Why is the spit curved
Wind direction changes and moves the spit inland
Why doesnโt the spit grow across the estuary to form a bar
The rivers current stops deposition across the estuary
