What is ridge push?

A
  • The result of gravity acting down the slope of the ridge. This is also known as gravitational sliding.

What is slab pull?

A

-Due to the pushing of the subducting plate against the overriding plate, there is frictional resistance that gives rise to both shallow and deep earthquakes in subduction zones.

What causes a hotspot?

A
  • A concentration of radioactive elements below the crust causs a hot spot to develop fgrom this a plum of magma rises to eat into the plate above. Forming flattish volcanoes, referred to have shield volcanoes.

Name one volcanic event you have studied.

A
  • The eruption of Mt Nyiragongo, Congo January 2002.
  • Associated with the African Rify Valley.
  • The main crate of the volcano is 250 m deep, two kilometers wide and often contians a lava lake.
  • It has erupted 30 times since the ninteenth century.
  • It is repsponcible for 40 per cent of Africas recorded volcanic activity.
  • The lava is very fluid. Traveling at 90 kilometres per hour.
