Plate Techtonic Flashcards
Focus of an earthquake
The centre of the earthquake.
Epicentre
In the surface of the Earth directly above the focus.
Primary waves of earthquakes
Arrive first and fast. Travel through solid rock snd fluids. Push and pull in the direction they move in. Transfer energy from focus to epicentre.
Secondary Waves
Only move through solid rock. Move in an up and down motion. Transfer energy from focus to epicentre.
Surface waves
They travel through the surface of the crust in a rolling motion. The ground moves side to side and is responsible for most of the shaking people feel.
Rayleigh Waves
They move in an up and own motion and only travel through the crust.
Constructive waves
When the plates are moving away from each other. The result of this is often shield volcanoes.
Destructive waves
When an oceanic plate is forced under a continental plate. This causes extreme pressure in the mantle forcing lave up through the crust. This zone of high pressure is called the subduction zone.
Conservative boundary
When two plates are sliding past each other. If the two plates get stuck and suddenly slide past each earthquakes are released.
