Cold Environments Flashcards
What is a cold environment?
A cold environment is an area of land that is constantly under freezing
What is latitude
Latitude is how far away from the equator you are and how close to the different poles you are. If you are standing on one of the poles you have a high latitude degree.
What is altitude?
Altitude is how high above sea level you are.
What is precipitation?
Precipitation is water in different forms that fall from clouds e.g. rain, hail, sleet and snow.
What is evaporation?
When the sun heats up water and it turns to water vapour and rises into the air.
What is condensation?
Condensation is when water vapour cools and turns into clouds.
What is surface run off?
Surface run off is when eater flows straight to the river from the ground.
What is infiltration?
Infiltration is when water moves in to the soil from the ground.
What is soil moisture storage.
When water fills in the pores in between soil particles.
What is percolation?
Water moves deep downwards into permeable rock.
What is soil moisture flow?
Water flows horizontally through the soil towards the river.
What is groundwater storage?
Water fills in the cracks in rocks and is stored deep underground.
What is groundwater flow?
Water flows very slowly horizontally towards the river through the rocks.
What is interception storage?
It is water that is caught by building and vegetation.
Characteristics of a corries
Steep back wall and side.
Bowl shape.
Some freeze thaw weathering at the top of the point.
Where there is less erosion at the front of the corrie there might be a build up of rocks called a moraine or rock lip.
