What is a plastic?
A synthetic material (meaning they are man made)
What is a monomer?
Small single units which can be joined together to create a polymer
What is a polymer?
A large chain of monomer units joined together
What is meant by the term polymerisation?
The making of a polymer
What is addition polymerisation?
The simplest method if making a polymer which happens when monomers add together to create a polymer chain
How are polymers made?
By breaking the double bond within the monomer and adding many monomers together
What must we do to show that polymers are very large molecules?
Leave the bonds open at the end to show it would go on and on and on
What is a repeating unit?
The section of a polymer chain which is repeated several times. They do not contain a carbon-to-carbon double bond but do contain open bonds to indicate repetition
