Plasma Proteins Flashcards
what does serum contain?
plasma and fibrinogen
what does plasma contain?
proteins, water and solutes
what are the functions of plasma proteins?
transport, maintaining osmotic pressure, maintaining pH, defense, coagulation
what are the main plasma proteins?
albumin (60-70%)
globulins (38%)
fibrinogen (4%)
how are plasma proteins measured?
- quantitative - changes in absorbance
- semiquantitative - SPE (bands)
- biological activity
- immunoassays
how does disease effect plasma proteins?
- impacts protein synthesis
- effects protein distribution
- rate of catabolism
- rate of excretion
what are the types of globulins?
a1, a2, B, Y
what does a1 antitrypsin do and when is it increased?
protects lungs from infections/irritants
pregnancy, acute infections, trauma, pulmonary emphysema and hepatic disorders
what does a2 macroglobulin do?
binds and inactivates endopeptidases, found in increased nephrotic syndrome
what are the a2 globulins?
macroglobulin, haptoglobin, ceruloplasmin, a-fetoprotein
what are the B globulins?
transferrin which transfers iron
what do complement proteins do?
interact with AgAb and destroy bacteria and viruses
what do gamma globulins do?
aka immunoglobulins
immune response, allergic response, mucosal secretions and antigen recognition
what does IgM and IgG do?
primary and secondary immune response
what does IgE do?
found on basophils and mast cells - allergic response
