Plasma Membrane & Cellular Traffic Flashcards
Plasma Membrane
-Also known as cell membrane
-Insoluble boundary of the living cell that maintains the conents of the cell
-regulates movement of substances in and out of the cell.
Fluid Mosaic Model
describes the flexibility of the membrane and the proteins, etc. studded within it.
Phospholipid molecules
-makes up most of the cell membrane
-provides a barrier between cytoplasm and outside of cell
Proteins (Plasma Membrane)
used to move molecules across the membrane
channel proteins
assists the movement of substances that cannot cross through the phospholipid bi layer
Phospholipid structure
-phosphate group is hydrophillic/polar
-lipids are hydrophobic/non-polar
cholestorol in the membrane
helps maintain the integrity of the membranes
glycoprotein
sugar attached to a protein
important in cell recognition and commmunication
Semi permable
allows only select molecules to pass the membrane
fatty acid tail
-non polar
-hydrophobic
- water hating
phosphate head
-polar
-hydrophillic
-water loving
intracellular
inside the cell
extracellular
outside the cell
what substances move across the membrane?
oxygen, water, carbon dioxide
bi layer
two layers of phospholipids.
transmembrane protein
-type of integral protein
-gateway to allow transport to substances that cant pass through the bilayer
