Organelle Definitions & Cell Theory Flashcards
Cell Theory
- All living things are composed of cells
-Cells only arise from pre-existing cells
-Cells are the smallest unit of life
Cytoplasm
Its a medium for chemical reactions and for other organelles to work within
also surrounds other organelles of the cells
Nucleus
Contains most of the cells genetic material (DNA), which regulates the activities of the cell.
Ribosomes
creation of proteins
Nucleolus
Creation of ribosomal RNA. Assembly of ribosomal subunits.
Smooth ER
Makes lipids, transports lipids through cell
Rough ER
Making, folding, and modifications of proteins, transport of proteins through the cell.
Lysosomes
Intracellular digestion of macromolecules, breaks down old organelles and debris.
Golgi body
modification, packaging and transport of proteins and lipids through the cell in vesicles
Vacuoles
vesticles transport materials through cell, storage for food, waste and water
Mitochondria
the site of cellular respiration, makes energy
Chloroplast
the site of photosynthesis, using sun to create glucose.
Cytoskeleton
maintains the cell shape and internal organisation
centrioles
split the cell and DNA during cell division, organize microtube and determine location of other organelles
Cell Membrane
Creates a barrier around cell, controls what enters and exits
