Plasma Membrane Flashcards
What the Plasma Membrane is made up of
Phospholipid bilayer, Glycolipids, Cholesterol, Glycocalyx, Lipid Rafts, Membrane proteins,
Phospholipid Bilayer
forms the basic fabric of the membrane, anchors the other components. Hydrophilic (water loving) heads point out. Attracted to water in the intracellular and extracellular fluid.
Hydrophobic (water fearing) tails point in.
Glycolipids
Lipids with attached sugar groups
Cholesterol
Stabilizes the phospholipids
Glycocalyx
Carbohydrate rich areas used for cell-to-cell recognition
Lipid Rafts
Areas of saturated phospholipids and cholesterol
Integral/ transmembrane protein
embedded in one membrane or extend through both phospholipid layers.
Peripheral proteins
loosely attached to the peripheral proteins
