Organic/Inorganic Flashcards
Types of Inorganic molecules
Water, Salts, Acids and Bases
Types of Organic molecules
Carbohydrates, Lipids, Proteins and Nucleic Acids
Carbohydrates
made up of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen
structural unit - monsaccharides in 1:2:1 ratio
provide the body with a ready easily used source of cellular fuel
Carbohydrates sub group
Monosaccharides, Disaccharides, Polysaccharides
Lipds
made up of carbon hydrogen and oxygen
no structural unit
protects and insulates the bodies organs and is the major source of stored energy in the body and a cell membrane component
Lipids sub group
Triglycerides, Phospholipids, Steroids, Eicosanoids
Proteins
made up of carbon, oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen and sometimes sulfur
structural unit - Amino Acid
composes 10-30% of cell mass and is the basic structural material of the body
Nucleic Acid
made up of Carbon, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Hydrogen and Phosphorous
Structural Unit - Nucleotide
Provides direction to build every protein in the body
Protein structure levels
Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, and Quaternary
Primary Protein Structure
refers to identity and arrangement of amino acids
Secondary Protein Structure
refers to geometric arrangement
Tertiary Protein Structure
bends and folds from interaction among the R groups
Quaternary Protein Structure
two or more protein chains
Saturated Fats
no double bonded carbons
Unsaturated Fats
one or more double bonded carbons
