Plasma Flashcards
How to administer plasma
Thaw first
Must predict when pt may need plasma since thawing takes time
Why administer plasma?
Patient may be missing coagulation factors, so plasma transfusion replenishes those coag factors
How many bags to pool cryoprecipitate in?
5 bags
Cryoprecipitate used for
Fibrinogen replacement
FFP vs FP24
- FFP: fresh frozen plasma frozen within 8 hrs
- FP24: frozen plasma frozen within 24 hrs and has less coag factor than FFP
When to use FFP
Treat coag factor deficiency bc has all coag factors
When to use FP24
- Transfusions
- Increase blood volume, pt has most or all coag factors
When to use liquid plasma (was never frozen)
Trauma situations
Liquid plasma expiration date
5 days after whole blood, so real number ~26 days
T/F
Liquid plasma is good to give to a patient with coag factor deficiency bc it contains most/all coag factors
False
Coag factors greatly diminished
Frozen plasma storage
< -18°C for up to 1 yr
How to prep cryoprecipitate
Slowly thaw FFP at 1-6°C, remove liquid, then resuspend solid components in 15ml leftover plasma
Cryoprecipitate storage
<-18°C up to 1 yr
Thaw at 37C and store at RT until expiration
Cryoprecipitate expiration after 37°C thaw
- 4 hr for pools
- 6 hr for singles
What is cryo-reduced plasma?
Leftover plasma from making cryoprecipitate
What does cryo-reduced plasma contain?
Plasma proteins and ADAMTS13
