Q

What is Photosynthesis

What is the equation for photosynthesis

What function does glucose have

A

Carbon Dioxide + Water > Glucose + Oxygen

Photosynthesis is vital process that occurs in leaves of plants - leaves use chlorophyll and light

Glucose acts as food for plant

Q

Explain function of following plant adaptations:
- Broad leaves
-
Thin leaves
- Xylem & Phloem
- Chloroplast
- Stomata
- Guard Cells
- Midrib
- Petiole-

A
  • B-road leaves -large surface area to absorb as much sunlight as possible
  • Thin leaves - provide short diffusion pathway for glasses to move in/out of cells
  • Xylem/Phloem - transport water minerals ions and glucose around plant
  • chloroplast contains green substance called chlorophyll which traps energy from sun for photosynthesis
  • Stomata - tiny holes found mainly underneath leaf to allow gases to diffuse in/out of leaf. Each hole is a single Stoma
  • Guard cells - control opening and closing of Stomata
  • Midrib - provides strength throughout leaf keeping it upright and sturdy in wind
  • Petiole - attaches leaf to stem

Q

What are 4 main layers of a

Describe each

A
  • Upper layer
Waxy layer protects from water loss, disease and weather
  • Palisade layer
Adapted to absorb a lot if light..had lots of chloroplasts . Shaped like tall box
  • Spongy layer
  • Lower layer

Q

How is water absorbed for photosynthesis

What is a root hair cell- describe structure

A
  • through roots - have a type of cell called root hair cell
Projects into soil from root . Big surface area and thin walls which let water pass through easily . Normally in dark so do not contain chloroplasts and cannot carry out photosynthesis
  • transported through tubes in leaf
