Plants Flashcards
What is a monocot?
A plant that contains only contains a single cotyledon.
Long narrow leaf and parallel veins.
Vascular bundles are scattered.
Floral parts in multiples of 3 for angiosperms.
What is a dicot?
A plant that contains two cotyledons.
Broad leaf and network of veins.
Vascular bundles are in a ring.
Floral parts in multiples of 4 or 5 for angiosperms.
Where is vascular tissue found in a plant?
Roots
Stems
Leaves
What does the xylem transport?
Water
What does the phloem transport?
Food
What are the two types of roots?
Fibrous root( in monocots) and Tap root(in dicots).
Major functions of a root?
Absorb water
Absorb dissolved minerals
Stores starch (sometimes transported to other
parts of plant, and sometimes used by root itself)
Structure of a root?
Epidermis(outside)
Root cortex(contains large vacuoles for food storage.
Root endodermis(acts as a filter)
Vascular cylinder containing xylem and phloem
Function of a stem?
Transport of water and nutrients
Structure of a stem?
Epidermis(Protective cuticle and are perforated by stomata allowing gas exchange)
Cortex(stores water and food)
Pith(Similar to cortex but spongier
Located in center
Stores water and maybe small
amounts of food)
What are the two types of dicot stems?
Herbaceous
Woody
Parts of a leaf?
Epidermis
Stomata(permits gas exchange)
Spongy layer
Vascular tissue(Similar to cortex but spongier
Located in center
Stores water and maybe small
amounts of food)
Palisade Cells
What are the male parts of a plant?
Stamen(made of filament and anther)
What is the female reproductive part of a plant?
Stigma
Style
Ovary
