Plants Flashcards
What is transpiration?
Transpiration is the process by which water vapour is lost in plants. The water vapour evaporates from the cells lining the air spaces inside the leaf and then pass out through the stomata by diffusion
What is translocation?
Translocation is the movement of dissolved sugars from the leaves to the rest of the plant
What are the different components of the inside of a leaf?
Cuticle, Upper Epidermis, Palisade Mesophyll Cell, Spongy Mesophyll Cell, Air Spaces, Lower Epidermis, Guard Cells + Stomata (in order)
What is osmosis?
Osmosis is the diffusion of water through a partially permeable membrane from a high concentration (dilute solution) to a low concentration (concentrated solution)
How can you tell if a plant has a magnesium deficiency?
If a plant has a magnesium deficiency then the leaves will start turning yellow
How can you tell if a plant has a protein deficiency?
The plant’s growth will be stunted and they will be short in stature
What are the 3 different types of plant defences?
Structural, chemical and protein-based
How do plants protect themselves?
Plants can protect themselves in a number of ways eg. Growing thorns to warn of predators, producing toxic chemicals, using dead matter as protection (bark on trees) etc.
