Heart and Blood Flashcards
What organ system does your heart belong to?
The circulatory system
How does the circulatory system work?
1) Your heart pumps blood into your lungs where it picks up oxygen
2) The (oxygenated) blood travels back to your heart
3) The heart gives it a second push which sends it all around the body into different organs and tissues
4) The blood travels back to the heart and the system restarts
What are the names of the different parts of the heart?
Aorta, pulmonary vein, left atrium, left ventricle, right atrium, right ventricle, vena cava and pulmonary artery
What side of the heart deals with oxygenated blood and what side deals with deoxygenated blood?
Oxygenated = Left
Deoxygenated = Right
Do humans have a singular or double circulatory system?
Double
How does the double circulatory system work?
Because humans have a double circulatory system, the blood actually passes through the heart twice per loop. It goes from the heart to the lungs, then back to the heart and then to the rest of the body before going back to the heart
What is the job of blood?
To transport materials and heat around the body and to help protect us against disease
What makes up blood?
1) Plasma
2) Red blood cells
3) White blood cells
4) Platelets
What is plasma?
1) a straw coloured liquid
2) mainly water
3) transports carbon dioxide, digested food, urea, hormones and heat
What are red blood cells?
1) contain haemoglobin (a red protein that combines with oxygen)
2) they have no nucleus
3) small and flexible so they can fit through narrow vessels
4) their job is to transport oxygen
What are white blood cells?
1) they’re larger than red blood cells
2) have a nucleus
3) can change shape
4) defend the body by fighting germs that cause disease
5) produce antibodies
What are platelets?
1) involved in blood clotting and scab formation to stop bleeding if your skin is cut
What are the three types of blood vessels?
Arteries, veins and capillaries
What is the job of the arteries?
To carry blood away from the heart straight after it’s been pumped
What is the job of the veins?
To carry blood back to the heart
