Planting Media Flashcards
Container gardening requires a specific soil mixture to be used. Must be porous in order to allow good aeration of the plant roots. minimize the risk of waterlogging and rottening of plant roots.
Planting Media
mixture is dark brown like chocolate cookie crumbs. a mixture of 3 part loam soil, 1 part compost or composted
manure and 1 part rice hull or coconut coir dust or washed river sand.
Soil-Media
requires 3 parts clay soil to 2 parts of compost to 1 part rice hull (or its substitute).
Clayey soil
can be found at the Sky Garden of Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) actively promotes Urban gardening and agriculture in general specially to the youth.
Urban Garden Set-up
soil-less vegetable production, ideal for small spaces typical in urban area. only requires enough sunlight, air movement and protection from rain. Not need electricity, comes from recycled materials and it requires low manpower.
Hydroponics
Integrated system of aquaculture and hydroponics whereby the fish excretions serves as the “food” for the plants in the system.
Simple Nutrient Addition Program (SNAP)
7 to 8 o’ clock in the morning, weather is not too hot, one
watering in the morning. If it is very hot, plant demand is high watering should be done 4- 6 o’clock in the afternoon.
Watering needs
Each crop has their own recommended management practices, from soil sterilization, sowing and transplanting techniques that should be followed.
Sowing and planting
the soil at a depth of 2 to 3 inches below. Will encourage maximum air flow around the roots, better water and nutrient uptake
Cultivating
to benefit from the nutrients and water without having to compete with other unwanted plants. native to the environment, usually grow bigger and faster
Weeding
containers may be top dressed with well-composted
manure or compost every two weeks. rice washings and water used to rinse meat and fish
Feeding the plants
act as repellants to certain pests like basil, oregano and marigold. In case of an occurrence of nfestations, record and apply appropriate biological, physical, mechanical, and - in severe cases - chemical control measures
