Expand on Munster
After Mary failed to take control of Ireland, with her plantation in the counties of Laois and Offaly (which were renamed kings, County and Queens County ) Elizabeth the first decided to establish a plantation in the south-west of Ireland in the province of Munster. The plantation was established in 1586, and Elizabeth gave the task of getting English settlers to emigrate to Munster to the undertakers. These undertakers paid rent to the English crown for thousands of acres of land, which then rented out to their tenants, the undertakers had the responsibility of providing weapons for their settlers, and for fortified building, or born to near the settlement should the nearest Irish attack, they were also forbidden from renting land to the native Irish.
What are the 4 reasons Munster failed
The four reasons why the Munster plantation failed
Fist,y the undertakers failed to encourage the right sort of tenants to Munster because it was so far from England
Secondly, the undertakers also failed to provide weapons and fortified bone for their tenants. This meant the settler had no protection from the native Irish or O’Neill’s army from Ulster.
Lily, the undertakers broke the rails and the large Irish to rent
Finally, in taking the land from the native Irish, the English had angered all Irish people, including O’Neill when the next plantation of Ireland took place in Ulster. They had learned many lessons from the failure of the monster plantation, and they would ensure the likes of O’Neill would not be able to drive the English out of Ireland again .
What are the causes?
.To spread the Protestantism religion across Ireland in the aftermath of the reformation
.To civilise Ireland by bringing in English laws and making the English monarchs the ruler of Ireland
. To prevent English enemies from using Ireland as a backdoor into England. This was especially important for Elizabeth and her successor James the first son of Mary Queen of Scott and the aftermath of the Spanish Armanda.
