Plantae - Parts of angiosperms Flashcards
flower
- sexual structure
- where pollination occurs
anther
-sac where pollen is produced
petal
-attracts pollinators with bright colours
stigma
-pollen receiving site
ovary
-female sexual organ
style
-connects pollen (sperm) to ovary for fertilization
ovule
-unfertilized seed
pollen grains
- sperm
- gametophyte
- one pollen grain = two sperm cells
stamen
-produces microspores that become pollen grains
pistil
-produces ovules
What is inside an ovule?
- one haploid egg (gametophyte)
- one diploid polar cell (sporophyte)
How does pollen reach the ovule?
- pollen first is transferred via stigma
- pollen tube grows down from style to ovule
What type of fertilization do angiosperms do and why?
- double fertilization
- second fertilization forms fruit that protects seed
What are the two parts of double fertilization?
- one sperm fertilizes egg to make zygote (diploid)
- one sperm fertilizes polar cell to make endosperm (triploid)
What do the endosperm and zygote do together?
-fuse to become seed (sporophyte)
