Plant Transport Flashcards
What are xylem vessels?
These are xylem vessels. They are towards the middle.
Xylem carries water and minerals ions upwards from the soil around the plant to the stem and leaves - This is called the “transportation stream”.
Mature Xylem vessels are dead cells in long continuous columns.
What are phloem vessels?
These are phloem vessels. They are on the outside.
Phloem carries sugary sap up and down from leaves to the rest of the plant - This is called “translocation”.
Phloem cells are made of living cells.
What is transpiration?
Transpiration is the evaporation of water from the leaves.
What is the transpiration stream?
The Transpiration Stream is the movement of water upwards through xylem vessels.
What is translocation?
Translocation is the movement of sugary sap up or down the stem in the phloem.
