Nutrient
A balanced means getting all the nutrients in the correct proportions.
- proteins
- fats (lipid)
- carbohydrates (starch and sugars)
- (plus water and fibre)
- vitamins and minerals (micronutrients)
Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are needed for to give the body energy.
Carbohydrates
Sources of carbohydrates include starch and sugar. Starch is found in cereals, cornflour, potatoes, pasta and flour.
Sugar is found in fruit, vegetables, honey, milk and malt products. Glucose is a type of sugar that can be used right away for energy or stored away to be used later.
Fats/Lipids
Fats/Lipids are needed for to provide concentrated sources of energy and help to insulate the body in cold weather. Also they support cell growth. They also help protect your organs, absorb some nutrients and produce important hormones too.
Fats/Lipids
Sources of fats/lipids include saturated fats are usually obtained from animal sources, for example butter and lard. The exceptions are coconut and palm oils. Polyunsaturated fats come from vegetable sources, such as sunflower oil.
Protein
Protein is needed for growth and repair of the body/building up cells and tissue.
Protein
Sources of protein include animal products like meat, fish, cheese, milk and eggs. Vegetable sources include soya-bean products, pulses and nuts.
