Plant Tissues & Organs Flashcards
What are examples of Plant Organs?
Leaves, roots, stems and reproductive structures.
What are the different types of tissues found in leaves?
Spongy mesophyll, Epidermal tissue, Stomata and Palisade mesophyll.
What is a Spongy Mesophyll?
Something that contains air spaces that help with gas exchange throughout the leaf.
What is an Epidermal Tissue?
Something that covers the outer surface of leaves as well as the rest of the plant.
What is a Stomata?
Something that is found in the lower epidermis, they help make diffusion easier of gases in and out the leaf if they are open. Guard cells are capable of closing these gaps.
What is a Palisade Mesophyll?
Something that is a row of cells located below the upper epidermis.
The cells are also exposed to sunlight and the cells have a lot of chloroplasts.
What are xylem cells?
Plant tissue that conveys water and minerals from the roots to the rest of the plant.
What are adaptations of xylem cells?
Dead cells
Lignin
No end wall
What is lignin?
Strengthens and waterproofs elongated cells in the cell wall
What are no end walls?
Something that a plant has means that successive cells form a long tube for ease of transport
What are the xylem cells and what does it mean/do?
Dead, meaning tubes are hollow & resistance to water flow is low
