Plant Tissues Flashcards
What are plant tissues?
A collection of specialised cells to carry out a specific function for the plant
What are palisade cells?
These are cells that contain a lot of chloroplasts for photosynthesis. The majority of these are found in the palisade mesophyll
Rearrange the following layers of tissue to where they'd be found on a leaf (highest = the top of the leaf) Spongy mesophyll Lower epiderdermis Upper epidermis Waxy cuticle Palisade mesophyll Waxy cuticle
Waxy cuticle Upper epidermis Palisade mesophyll Spongy mesophyll Lower epiderdermis Waxy cuticle
Which layer of the leaf has the most air space? Why?
The spongy mesophyll - for gas diffusion
Complete the sentence:
a) Xylem vessels transport…
b) Phloem vessels transport…
a) Water and mineral ions from the roots to the stem & leafs
b) Dissolved sugars
What part of the plant do bugs want to eat? Why?
The phloem vessels, because they transport dissolved sugars and bugs want to eat the sugar so that they have glucose to conduct aerobic respiration
What do the guard cells protect and why?
The stomata - so that they do not allow excess water to leave the cell through evaporation.
What is the function of the stomata?
To allow waste gases to leave the plant, and to allow entry of required gases
