Heart Flashcards
Where do Veins and Arteries go?
Veins go IN the heart
Arteries go AWAY from the heart
Describe the lumen of
Veins
Arteries
Capillaries
Veins - large, wide lumen
Arteries - small, narrow lumen
Capillaries - tiny lumen
Which side of the heart contains oxygenated blood?
Left
Describe the sound a heart makes and what each part is
Lub Dub
Lub - atriums contracting together
Dub - ventricles contracting together
What do semi lunar valves do?
These prevent blood getting pushed back up through the heart again, and allow blood to pass through once. Prevents blood clots and heart attacks.
Why is there more fat on the left side of the heart?
Because the left side pumps blood to the entire body, and needs more power from the muscular tissue to pump it that far.
Which compartment of the heart does the pulmonary vein lead into?
Left Atrium
What does lumen mean?
The gap inside blood vessels
Where does blood leave through the right ventricle?
Pulmonary Artery
Say how high or low the pressure of blood is for:
Veins
Arteries
Capillaries
Veins - low pressure
Arteries - high pressure
Capillaries - very low pressure
Which blood vessels lead into the right atrium?
Superior/ inferior vena cava
Fill the blanks:
Arteries have _____ outer walls due to the ____ ________. Veins have ____ outer walls but the inner lining is ______(er). Capillaries have an outer wall that is a ______ ____ thick
Thick High pressure Thin Smooth Single cell
Which blood vessel leads out of the left ventricle?
Aorta
Blood does a single circulation. True or false?
False - blood does a double circulation because it goes through the heart twice
Explain what happens to the heart in coronary heart disease
This is caused when the amount of bad cholestral is too high,
so it causes the blood vessels to get narrower.
This causes a blood shortage to the heart, and without enough blood the heart can’t pump properly and stops from exhaustion
